Breeding season is officially underway here on the farm, and it’s shaping up to be a busy (and exciting) spring.
As of now, we have 5 confirmed does bred, 5 more still to go, plus one additional lady who got “snuck in” — because, well… goats like to keep things interesting.
We responsibly pen breed our goats and only breed does when they are old enough, weigh enough, and when their due dates make sense for our farm life. This isn’t a free-for-all situation over here. We plan carefully, manage pairings intentionally, and space things out so everyone — humans and goats alike — can thrive.
That said… Trump had other plans.
He managed to jump a 6-foot fence and enjoy a several-hour tryst with all the ladies before we caught him. Luckily, I keep meticulous breeding records, or this season could have turned into complete chaos. Instead, it’s just slightly more exciting than planned.
Our does are treated with an incredible amount of respect, care, and extra attention during pregnancy — honestly, it’s almost ridiculous how spoiled they get. Extra monitoring, extra nutrition, and plenty of love are non-negotiable around here.
Based on current breedings, it’s looking like our kidding season will kick off in late April, and within the next few weeks we should know exactly when the season will wrap up.
I’ve already ultrasounded and confirmed nearly every pregnancy on the farm, and I can honestly say it never gets old. I absolutely love scanning — there’s something magical about seeing those tiny lives on the screen. I’m fairly convinced I was a human midwife in a past life or something along those lines.
I’ve always tried to count kids in utero, and I usually get surprisingly close — so imagine my shock when I scanned Luna today and clearly saw five sacs with babies inside. Five.
Now, yes, it’s early and reabsorption is possible… but she’s already rocking a pretty impressive belly at just four weeks along, so we’ll see how this unfolds. Especially interesting since she’s given us triplets the past two years.
All in all, it’s an exciting time on the farm. Plans are coming together, bellies are growing, and anticipation is building.
Stay tuned — baby goats are officially loading. 🐐💛
